Hey y'all! Just giving a little shoutout to some friends I have that are going to be a part of FLUX tonight! First off, Rebecca, one fifth of our amazing Young Blood team is going to be doing a performance there (9-midnight!!) and our buds from Signs for Dimes just got done posting up a mural for Atlanta artist, Carolyn Carr! Carolyn Carr: Tomorrow is Another Day

A participating Flux Projects Work of Art

FLUX is a one-night public art celebration presented by Flux Projects in the streets, on the building and in the spaces of the Castleberry Hill Art District. The event includes large and small-scale projections, performance, multimedia projects, and public interactions.

Tomorrow is Another Day was conceived and designed by Artist Carolyn Carr and executed by atraditional sign painting company, Signs for Dimes. Carr employed the artists of Signs for Dimes to hand paint the text, Tomorrow is Another Day, which will cover almost all of the facade of the two story building, Stable 1897, located in Castleberry Hill.

Tomorrow is Another Day is the last line spoken in the epic film, Gone With the Wind. This text was chosen by Carr for these words, in the context of past and present conditions, beg questions about contemporary life while simultaneously acting to promote optimism in a complex social and political urban arena. This work is part of a larger body of work that examines personal and social realities via a non-linear narrative.

Carr’s upcoming exhibitions will be in November 2010 at Gavlak Gallery,, New York City and January at the Gavlak Gallery, Palm Beach.

Signs For Dimes,, established in March 2010, works in the time honored tradition of custom, hand painted advertisement, to bring more color and creative aspects to the urban landscape. The signs for Dimes Team includes Adam McNeil, William Mitchell and Melanie Wade.

Carolyn Carr has been a resident of Castleberry Hill since 1996. Carr lives between Atlanta and NY, but calls Atlanta home. She is represented by the Gavlak Gallery in NY and Palm Beach.

Good Morning!

I want to bring to your attention these amazing new necklaces we have in the shop!

Hand painted lockets from Khara Ledonne, house gorgeously rendered paintings. They are like little surprises/secrets to wear around your neck!

Khara is super sweet and mega talented, and I thought I knew how beautiful they'd be from seeing them online, but they just blew me away in person!

Fall in the Atl

For all of you who haven't been counting down, the first day of fall is coming up on September 22nd. Fall in Atlanta is one of our more happenin' times, and this weekend is kind of its jumping off point.
The goings-ons:
The 4th annual Atlanta Arts Festival runs September 18-19 in Piedmont Park from 10a.m.-7p.m. on Saturday and 10a.m.-6p.m. on Sunday. I know where I'll be going on my day off! I'm ashamed to admit that I've never been; the prospect of 200+ vendors to peruse is too good to pass up.

Sometime before or after the Arts Festival, you should make your way to Young Blood for the Traveling Trunk Show, which will be up from 2-7 p.m. Come see us! :)

Tomorrow also marks the 13th year of the East Atlanta Strut. Here's the deal-io from their site:

Last Vacation.

This is my last little vacation of the summer ( I know, I know it's september) but, here in the south our summers last a little longer. And since I'm going to the beach for a wedding it feels pretty summery still. I'm excited to go on our little road trip with my friends and hopefully we won't miss the ferry! Bonjour Amigos!

Last night's show was so much fun! Sanithna Phansavanh's work looked(looks) beautiful and the Modern Skirts put on a killer show!

And...the weather is amazing today! Fall is in the air and I've been waiting for fall since..well, last fall! Can't wait until the leaves start a'changin...

Weekend Time!

With no ado whatsoever,

I'm sure you all know about Sanithna Phansavanh's opening and Modern Skirts' performance at YB tomorrow night, but here's a little reminder. Also going on tomorrow night is Mike Germon and Truett Dietz's opening at Beep Beep gallery, which goes from 8-11p.m. Stop by and check it out as well (after visiting us, of course!). I haven't gotten to see the show yet, and will be just as surprised as you all are when I come in tomorrow, but I've checkout Sanithna's work online, and it's freakin' fantastic. Totally dig the superstition/mythology focus as it is, so I'm especially pumped for tomorrow night's show.

Hello all!

This post is long long long overdue! (by about 6 months.. oops). Anyways, back when John Reardon and Dennis McNett showed with us, John brought his tattoo equipment.. you know what that means.. Kelly and I couldn't pass up the opportunity to get tattooed! After mulling over a few ideas, we decided to go for it and get Jolene (our Young Blood shop cat) on us! It was such a treat getting tattooed by John- hope he enjoyed all the southern hospitality Atlanta has to offer and will return soon!

Some days, I am overcome with love for my city. True, we don't have good public transit, it's corporate as hell, blah blah blah. But there is no where on the map with the heart, soul and flavor of Atlanta and I love it here!

After years of courting, we *think* Atlanta's Esperanza will finally be repped at YB! We're taking it slow for now, starting with this freshness, the ATL Hold It Down foam hands.

As the Fall season's coming up, and it'll start to cool down (although not consistently cool till January, knowing Atlanta's schizophrenic weather) we've got some in-season shirts and scarves to keep you comfy and well-dressed. Yesterday was "Bark in the Park" and Jen and I got to bring our little puppies to the Braves game! It was tons of fun! We've got tons of fun comin our way too...

Rock Steady

Well hello Friday! Fall classes have started after my brief break and I can now appreciate the beauty of this day as a relief from the grind again.

Confession: I have a mild obsession with rocks.
Crystals and geodes--be still my heart. While I have probably 5 or 6 geodes, geode slices and chunks of amethyst crystals, wearing these earth treasures as jewelry is my favorite fix. I'll always prefer raw and natural looking pieces over polished stones, and if you throw in something cool like a brass or silver casting, especially if it's animal related, you've got me at hello.

Lauren Haupt is a pretty new jeweler we've carrying now, and I adore these little pyrite necklaces of hers.

We also just got some stuff in from Red Heart 13 (also known as Leila Marvel) which includes a necklace with a pretty little pyrite chunk hanging from a brass chain. I ordered one for myself :)

And you all know about one of our fave designers of earthy fabulousness-Stone and Honey. Here be a sneak peek of one of her new designs we're carrying.

It's not the exact pendant we have, but arlis (the name of this delight) is pretty darn close.

Wanna know an interesting fact/belief/ whatever about pyrite (fool's gold)? It is believed to "balance hormonal rhythms and ease the comfort of menstruation". Ha. A little less personal is the belief that pyrite also can aid a wearer's concentration and allow them to communicate more openly and honestly.

Here we have Miss Olive modeling a fashionable Fall scarflette and Day of the Dead hair barrette. Olive is the niece of our good friend, Kristen Gregory, a master esthetician at the local Salon Red.

Next up is the young and dapper Mr. Seven, sporting the latest limited-edition Young Blood tee designed by local artist, Stenvik Mostrom. Seven's mom is none other than Jen Pete, founder member of The Lady Rogue Business Network. Lookin' good, lil buddy!

Our final model today is Noah, a well-traveled young man shown here at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. He is wearing a classic YB logo tee. His hobbies include reading and tap dancing. His mother is an Atlanta photographer and founder of Nelda Mays Photography. His dad is local entrepreneur, Rick Jernigan, who hosts YB's credit card processing account through his company, Co-Card.

Over here at YB we love all the 4 legged but, some of us especially love the horses. So I'm really excited that we're hosting an auction on Saturday Sept 4th for Horse Rescue Retirement Relief Fund.

We hosted an all day BINGO fundraiser at our old space so I was more than happy to offer up our new space when they asked-So come on out and bid on some awesome art and help raise money for all the horses out there that need us!

Saturday, September 4th Young Blood will host a benefit auction for the Horse Rescue, Relief & Retirement Fund, a 501c3 non-profit organization.

"So Fine Equine: A Silent Art Auction"

Most of us have seen at least one episode of Mister Ed, and perhaps the majority of us have also ridden a pony at a petting zoo or local fair. Even if your experience with family Equidae stops there you have no doubt been entranced by a passing horse drawn carriage or your local mounted patrolman’s equine counterpart. You are not alone; archeological evidence suggests that humans have been mesmerized by horses since 5000 B.C. Like many of the animals humans love and respect, thousands of horses each year fall victim to abandonment or neglect. The Horse Rescue, Relief and Retirement Fund is committed to ending the suffering and neglect of horses. Each year HRRRF rescues and rehabilitates hundreds of horses and other farm animals. The rescue is asking artists to harness their horse fascination and create equine inspired works to be auctioned at Young Blood Gallery and Boutique on September 4th. Rainy Friday Post!

Hello lovely readers,

Today I'd like to show you a little bit of what inspires me decor-wise. When my studio apartment is feeling especially zen-less, I go to sites like apartment therapy and decor8 for ideas, and browse for thrift deals at Paris on Ponce and the recently discovered Highland Row Antiques. (I'm ashamed to admit that I've been at Young Blood since January and just made it into Highland Row a few weeks ago; it's great, so don't wait like I did!)

Would you believe me if I told you I found these vintage silhouette
pieces for $16 for the pair at Highland Row?!

Another fun idea for inexpensive decorating is framing pretty cards. I bought these cards from Young Blood and bought wooden frames for around $4 a piece, and look what turned out!

Excuse the less-than-mediocre photo, but these
do look great in my place in person.

And finally, this cabin+cub print my friend bought (also at YB) turned out great in a $3 frame. You can't beat steals like that!

I also thought the rainy weather theme was appropriate for today.

So if your place needs some sprucing up, or you just want a change of artistic scenery, check out some local joints with cards, prints and art before dropping your change on one of a million beach scene posters from wal-mart or michael's.

Steel Wheels Show Rolling in Labor Day Weekend

Thank you, guardian angels of Atlanta Hip Hop, for bringing the homie Mendez to Atlanta from Miami a few years ago
because with him came a smorgasbord of B-Boy grit .

His brainchild, Mad Clout, is multi-media hot shit. They design clothing, host B-boy and B-girl get-downs for the whole fam, and sponsor several graff shows, including Steel Wheels, taking place here in Atlanta for the third year. The show will showcase some of the world's greatest artists, all inspired by the wonderful world of the railroad.

I always try to remind myself of that. There are beautiful things up there.

Were any of you far enough away from the city to see the meteor shower the other night?

I was desperate to see it- went out onto my balcony on North Ave every 10 minutes hoping to catch even the faintest glimmer, but no luck :( A big shock, I know. damn city lights.

Apparently, this shower, Perseids, happens every august and can produce up to 60 per hour.

Don't worry, there's a "very reliable" shower in December, and you can bet I'll be as far away from the city as possible this time. Montagnes, if I'm smart!

Although I didn't get to see the shower, I did get to hear it. NASA had a live meteor audio feed (yes, I realize that I'm revealing just how much of a nerd I am), and I listened for about 10 minutes. When they break the atmosphere they sound like high pitched flute notes.

On a random side note, I participated in a MRI today, for a cancer research study. It was a study of brain function in normal adults compared to brain function in adults who had brain tumors as children. Before I went in, everyone I know was telling me I was going to be all freaked out because it was so closed, and it was loud, scary, etc.

On the contrary, I could have stayed in there all day!

I had this helmet with a mirror strapped to it, that showed me a computer screen, and for a little while I imagined I was an astronaut and it was awesome! Of course, I'm sure this was nothing like a space shuttle, but you know, can't blame a girl for dreaming :)

Well I just wanted to say what a great show Living Walls put on last night at Eye drum. It was really exciting to see all this really great big work from artists from all over the world! I was blown away-I hope all you out of town artists enjoyed our city and thanks for all the great work you left behind!

Keep a look out on Thoughtmarker-Mike's been documenting all the art around the city-I can't wait to take a look at all the pieces I haven't been able to locate yet.

Our August 7th opening of Harlequin and the Hare includes two inspiring artists, Ruth Marks and Sarah Watts! A collaboration of Watts' dainty paintings and Marks' intriguing blank faced characters becomes a whimsical show when brought together. Come see Michigan artist Ruth and native Atlantan Sarah in a circus of color and pretty faces before the closing night of the show August 29th.

Happy [almost Saturday], guys!

I've been on the road all day, and am just now able to catch a breather in front of the laptop. After spending a few days at the beach, during most of which I was sick, I had the privilege of being a backseat driver rather than the one behind the wheel. The sick card was successfully and shamelessly pulled in order to avoid 6 hours of driving. It was nice to be able to read a book and a magazine instead of fighting sleep up front; and let me go ahead and confess that I just bought 3 books from Barnes and Noble, and am currently in the midst of David Foster Wallace's Broom of the System.

I was drawn to the book by its cover, illustrated by Duke Riley.

Although not many novels, Young Blood always has some fun, artistic books in stock, including titles such as Young, Sleek, and Full of Hell. We have a huge stockpile of Ex Libris journals, which are made from used books of all kinds, so you can write your own story or memories.

We also always have zines and magazines on hand, with kitschy zines like "Sky Mall" and "Everybody's Book of Kittens" by Gemma Correll, and mags like Art Papers for your art-lusting pleasure.

Sneak Peak of Next Month's Show: Sanithna Phansavanh!

I have an especially good feeling about this next show. Sanithna's work is based on superstitions around the world, something we Southerners have definitely contributed to.

In Sanithna's own words, from his blog, The Prince and the Thief:

“Knock on Wood” explores superstitions, charms, and talismans. Drawings and paintings, inspired by beliefs from around the world, catalogue various actions, thoughts, and objects that attempt to relieve fear and uncertainty.

My brothers-in-arms, Modern Skirts, will be giving a very special and free performance. Trust me, they are homegrown, bona fide rockstars. Ask them about opening for R.E.M.

The soundtrack for the gallery viewing will be provided by my friend Alex Goose. Some of you folks may know him better as the guy who created The Blueprint 3 Outtakes, music that Jay-Z (unbelieveably) did not use on his last album.

A special project with my long-time buddy Tim Haught and his StreetLocal folks, one of Atlanta’s highly respected brands, will be released that night. I dare you to find something new and grand that they don’t already know about.

Also, keep your eyes peeled for some goodness from my-sister-from-a-different-mister, Dehanza Rogers, aka her celluloid self. When she’s not being Documentary Filmmaker Champ, you can find her in UCLA’s über-elite MFA Film Program.

Thanks everybody for coming to our opening last night -it was a great turn out! And double thanks to King of Pops and The Highland Ballroom Lounge for all the extra treats and entertainment.

I've had to think a lot about weddings lately because I have 3 coming up for some of my good friends. I don't think I can even count the amount of weddings I've been to in the last 10 so years and it's always interesting to see how folks plan them out, either fancy destination weddings or eloping with party in your home town later or just in your own backyard.

I am always inspired when looking at Design Sponge and their beautiful flower arrangements and locations when doing wedding design ideas and then Our Labor of Love photography everything looks so dreamy makes me think I'm going to a little wonderland for this couple before they start on their new beginnings in life together-

Wow, longest work day in a while!

Totally time consuming for me, but great for you guys- I entered a TON of new tees, onesies, messenger bags from Happy Family this afternoon (not all of which I even got to put out!). My favorite of this 1146 item inventory would have to be precious astronaut onesies in lavender and royal blue. Come scoop them up before they're gone, or before I decide to buy all of them and save them for future baby gifts.

Jessica Gonacha (now Jessica Swift, fyi) also brought us some great ceramic coasters, pendants, and prints, and I got to meet her. I don't know, there's just something special about getting to meet an artist whose work you might see on your wall at home, around your neck, etc. So yeah, new stuff, come chh-heck it out!

I also had the privilege of meeting both artists for tomorrow night's opening, and I gotta say, they're both genuinely friendly and lovely ladies! Honestly, I'm not gonna smooze up any artist I've met, but I really did feel honored to meet both Ruth Marks and Sarah Watts this afternoon. Wanna know more about 'em? First off! Coloring in the Lines at MINT gallery! Local artists such as Sam Parker, RLand, and the Paper Twins have filled in pages from a coloring book to be auctioned off in support of buying art supplies for inner city elementary schools. Good cause!

Second! Opening at Kibbee Gallery! Go see Sean Abrahams and Erin McCammant's new work in the show titled "Glitter and Ghouls"! What?! That title rules.. and according to local badass Ann-Marie Manker, the show is already up and looks amazing! She said it's going to fly off the wall.. be sure to get there soon! Red Alert Artist Call! Day of the Dead Show

It may be hot as doodoo but let's not forgot our wailing and gnashing of teeth just a few short months ago as the bitter cold beat us down. Personally, I love summer so much that I will gladly take the heat. Just thinking about the coming Fall then Winter gives me a little shudder.

One event that I know will take the edge off falls right before the Winter madness and that is THE DAY OF THE DEAD SHOW!!!

For those of you who haven't experienced the Mexican Day of the Dead tradition, it is basically a way to honor relatives who have died by devoting several days to their memory. The official holiday is November 2nd and leading up to that day, loved-ones build altars devoted to these relatives. They can be as simple as a photo with flowers or can stretch from floor to ceiling, loaded with all their favorite foods, huge bouquets, candles, and indulgences such as tobacco, chocolate and meth. (joke)

Please help us spread the word about Young Blood's contribution to this beautiful tradition. Our two lovely friends, Shannon Mulkey and Tracy Wagner are helping us organize a group art show where Atlanta artists will have their way with miniature coffins along with a big ass throw-down where we'll all drink, eat and dance our faces off while remembering days gone by with the departed souls in our lives. It's a tradition I admire more than most and I would love to share it with all of you!

Day of the Dead Show

Saturday October 30, 2010 - Sunday November 28th.
Opening party will be Saturday Oct 30th from 7pm-1pm.

The show will consist of 17”(h) x 7”(w) x 4" (d) handmade wooden coffins by local artists. We are providing the coffins, hosting the opening and doing all promotion for the event.

We are asking that each artist contribute $20 for the cost of the coffin and opening expenses. Beyond that, each artist is free to sell their piece for up to $500. Young Blood takes 50% off the top, so please keep that in mind when pricing. Additional coffins can be purchased for $15 & you can make as many as you’d like!

If you participated in the show last year and have left over coffins, you are welcome to use them at no cost, just be sure to let us know so we can include you in the program. We are asking that new artists submit 2 photos of their work.

The deadlines are as follows:

• August 23- please respond to call for entries and pay for coffins

Gather Atlanta

Are you wondering what GATL (Gather Atlanta) is?
GATL is a coalition of young creative organizations (MINT Gallery,WonderRoot, BurnAway.org, and ThoughtMarker.net) that puts on an annual conference for emerging creative organizations. The conference is based on a trade show model, with invited organizations hosting tables for with information, demonstrations, etc. The event also includes a panel discussion organized by Jeremy Abernathy of BurnAway.org

This year GATL takes place on July 31st at the Trees Atlanta building in Reynoldstown.
The panel discussion, "Art and the Public Sphere" will begin at 6:30pm and general networking will continue from 8:00pm until 10:00pm!

Time is running out!

Young blood's July art show, It came from left field, will soon be coming to a close on the 31st. Hurry and come catch its final showing days! The opening night, July 10th, was a huge success. Crowded and busy we promptly served drinks, music, and wonderful art! This show consisted of three artists, Ming Donkey, Jason Baldwin, and Herb Rieth, who all contributed unique and colorful pieces that made the show come to life. Ming Donkey's cluttered corner of the gallery overflows with little rain clouds, flickering television sets, and the blank faces of "worker men". It couldn't have been set up nicer, thanks to the artist who came to the gallery to set it all up himself! Ming Donkey also entertained us by coming to the opening, and mingled graciously with all of the guests who had come to see the show.
Jason Baldwin's mixed media paintings, which included strips from comic books cleverly painted into the pieces, lit up the room with their color. Baldwin also had more mellow, simple paintings. These consisted of soft blues and grays, which balanced out well with his other more colorful pieces.
Herb Rieth's collection was pleasantly unexpected, when he integrated cloth, bottle caps, and ribbon into his paintings. Neon pinks and greens popped off the canvas and quilt-like fabric pieces, illuminating the gallery, and fought skillfully with the more washed away colors of Ming Donkey across the room. Both Rieth and Baldwin expressed a more vivid color aspect, but with the help of Ming Donkey, the three artists work came together beautifully, making the show come to life and pleased both the artists and the viewers.

Into the Wild

The past couple of days I've had the privilege of hosting two of my favorite people in the world who came to Atlanta to visit and share in mini-adventures with me. On Wednesday, after dealing with a little incident in the parking lot (other party's fault) of Whole Foods and waiting outside for the police for what felt like forever, the three of us went trekking in Cochran Mill Park where we saw a Momma and baby bird right on the ground--momma threatened and tittered at us--, little toads hopping across the trail, and in the "nature center"area, a huge iguana and a blinking owl. It was hot as the dickens, but still so nice to get to spend some time outside of the concrete jungle for a few hours.

Speaking of which, we just got in some new owl prints and magnets by Adrienne Vita out of Portland,
and new jewelry by Jessie Williams of Edge of Urge (their photo obviously).

But since I still gotta put the latter out, this post had to be quick! Have a good weekend, guys and dolls!

Well, last Friday was the beginning of Free Art Friday. I'm super excited about this! What a fun way of raising awareness of local art, encouraging more people to get involved and make art, and exploring the local neighborhoods, hopefully by walking. Anyways, the gist of how it works is that you follow FAFATL on Twitter or Facebook and bright and early on Friday morning hints will be posted as to locations of where free art is hung! Finders keepers! You figure out where it is first and come armed to dismember it from it's hanging place.. and it's yours! Get ready to make and take! good evening ladies and gents.

this past week i got to spend a little time in the lovely amelia island!

it was a very lucky time, because

1. i got to go swimming in the ocean at night

and

2. one day, when i was trying to body surf (do. not. body. surf.), the giant-ass wave spun me around and made me choke on 5000 gallons of ocean water and i thought i was literally dying.

but i was victorious! and here to blog another day!

a cool thing about being away from the store for a couple of extra days, is when you get back everything looks different. we're constantly getting wonderful new things and it's refreshing to work in such a creative and dynamic space!

Culture Shock!

I've been working on a project the last couple of weeks for one of the "Culture Shock" events at the High Museum of Art. My good Friend Shannon Mulkey of I.C.E and I love Patina has organized this awesome fashion show of artists to open the new DALI exhibit opening up in August at the High. She has made blank dresses made out of canvas and each artist gets to do our artsy thing on them! It's been really fun so far and can't wait to see what all everyone has come up with.

The Even is August 7th. We also have an opening at YB that night so come by early and then check out the show at the High at 10 pm!

The dresses will be auctioned off the night of the event to benefit future Culture shock programing.

Hey friends,

As a local and independent business, Young Blood is all about supporting the arts, and encouraging you to create some of your own. Check out this article from Purge ATL which covers our etsy craft party from June, and discusses a little of the indie craft movement that's slowly but surely growing here in Atlanta and nationwide.

I totally grabbed this photo (from our etsy party) from Purge's site. Hope they're cool with that!

From purge again, here's an awesome review of Steve Dixey's work and some of the thought process behind it. I first Saw Steve's work at Beep Beep last year, and he had an awesome show here at Young Blood along with Ken TwoFour and Stevnik Mostrom a few months ago.

Finally, if you're still procrastinating (ahem, researching) on the internet, read this fantastically well-written article by Cheree Franco about Atlanta's upcoming Living Walls event August 13-15. It really got me excited!

Thanks Creative Loafing for the little shoutout and review of the Ponce Art Crew's (yours truly, Beep Beep, and Kibbee!) openings this past weekend! We're always a fan of sweet words.. hehe.. and it's so awesome that we can share the vicinity of our digs with other amazing spaces and people!

Continuing the dialogue amongst emerging creative
organizations in the metro Atlanta area, GATHER ATLANTA is back for the Second Annual
Creatives Conference to be held Saturday July 31st, at Trees Atlanta from 6:30-10pm.
Presented by BURNAWAY, MINT, ThoughtMarker and WonderRoot, GATHER ATLANTA
2010 is a conference promoting and facilitating collaboration between Atlanta’s independent and
emerging galleries, creative collectives and non-profits.

Attendees will have the opportunity to network, learn about a cross section of visual and
performing arts groups, discover new cultural offerings and learn how they can support their local artists as well as metro Atlanta creative industries through volunteerism and active participation.

In addition to these opportunities, there will also be a panel discussion, curated by Jeremy
Abernathy of BURNAWAY focusing on the topic of “Art and the Public Sphere”.

Hey doodlebugs,

This one is gonna be a quickie, but I wanted to show you guys and dolls some new stuff we've gotten in the shop recently.

As we've expanded the jewelry section recently, we of course have new pieces in for your wearable pleasure. Betsy and Iya have some great chain earrings and necklaces that came in not too long ago.

If this necklace wasn't cool enough, inside is a metal letter that says "I love you".

Also, Ming (one of our artists in the show tomorrow night) has been working diligently all day on one hell of an exhibition, so be sure to come by and check it out. Opening is at 7 tomorrow night!

Puppies!!

Jen here! Thought I'd take a second to introduce the newest member of my little family! Tuesday night I got a new pup! One of Maggie and Kelly's good friend, Pepin, went out to do yard work and found two darlings that somebody had dumped in her bushes! I'd been wanting another dog for a good while now to keep my Dachshund mix, Hansel, company so I headed over to meet them! Well, after seeing this face, I completely could not help myself and had to take him home to be spoiled and be a little brother to Hansel.

So here he is! and his name is Harbor! 100% mutt, but also 100% cute as hell.

He already made an appearance at the shop and loved it! Promptly sprawled out and took a nap right in the middle of the floor!

INDEPENDENCE and who is Esther Peachy Lefevre?

Well as I get my cucumber , pasta salad and veggie burgers ready for an evening cookout, I'm excited by the thought of the firework display later tonight. I've missed the last couple of years at good ol Esther Peachy Park in Cabbage town and glad to be a part this year. I have always been intrigued by who Esther "Peachy" is... and thought it would be easy to look her up on line. But couldn't find out one thing about her except for this little quote on some kind of "Southern Changes" archive. But, I thought it sounded like it might be her.

"Hazel Dickens, who has sung on the frontlines of labor strife for many years, brings that emotion to the women's defense. Her lively rendition of "The Coal Tattoo" brings to mind Atlanta's recently departed, and much missed, Esther Lefevre, whose voice similarly inspired urgency behind the social and moral struggle being fought. The beauty and authority of the music has aided many workers and organizers to survive the onslaught of violence, prejudice and unreason."

Gawrsh!

...It's already the 4th of July weekend! I'm up in Cumming with the boyfriend's family and we are so prepared for Sunday...too prepared perhaps. Don't worry, for the ridiculous volume of fireworks we possess, they're also good friends with the police captain who happens to be off-duty and lighting them off with us that evening.

YB loves Atlanta artist R. Land.

Feeling patriotic? One great way to support the economy is to support local businesses. A few of my favorite local Atlanta spots would have to be: Starlight Six Drive-In (just discovered this place with a girlfriend and had a great time. Word to the wise, get there a wee bit early, and when you find a space don't park outside the lines like a douche), Papi's Cuban Cuisine in midtown (great prices, great Cuban sandwiches and yucca fries), Stefan's Vintage, which is like a fun little treasure hunt in L5P, and Criminal Records (obviously a music/record store, also located in L5P).

I'd have to say, though, with an admitted bias, that Young Blood is by far my favorite local Atlanta business. Oh yeah! And don't forget one of our favorites, King of Pops!

Stay safe this weekend (don't drink and drive), but not too safe (play with fire)!

Hey sorry I missed you guys on Sunday... but, I was at the beach! with all my bestie friends digging my toes in the sand and swimmin with the fishies.

Some of our best YB buddies are in a show next week at the Welch Gallery at Georgia State. I'm really excited about it and can't wait to see what they come up with. Ben is one of our oldest friends and first YB intern that left us for San Fran boo hoo-but still shows his southern pride though is art work. John Paul and Stephanie had a show with us at the beginning of the year and our buddy Joey Orr is back in Atlanta from Chicago and we're excited to see what he's up to.

In this exhibition co-organizers Teresa Bramlette Reeves and Ben Goldman explore questions about the existence of something called “Southern Art.”

Does simply living and working in the South make one a “Southern Artist?” If one makes work about a particular location in the South, or engages in Bible belt philosophies or focuses on issues of racism and the legacies of the plantation economy, is she or he then a “Southern Artist?” Can an artist successfully incorporate Southern stereotypes and cultural icons without risk of being misunderstood? Are ideas about the South shaped by Southerners or are they imposed by others?

Hey ya'll!

Welcome to the quintessential Georgia summer. I have now been inducted for the year and welcomed by a celebration of ticks (trust me, you do NOT want me to go there!), skeeters and fresh blackberries. I am going to share with you a mini adventure of the Young Blood ladies Jen, Rebecca, and I accompanied by the lovely Jessie and Somer.

On Wednesday these gals and I went shooting at Rebecca's parents' place and had a blast. There are stories that would thrill and scare you, but until I receive permission, (for it would certainly by required in this instance) I'll just leave you with the knowledge of our badassed-ness and that we all had a great time. If you're facebook friends with us (YB) I'm sure wall photos of the adventure will be posted sometime so lurk us and check them out when they're up.

On a woodsy note, check out our new jewelry by Christine Domanic. Her branch necklaces utilized wood from a fallen Bradford pear tree in her yard so the tree could have new life on your lovely necks. I'm also particularly fond of the armadillo earrings.

I knew I'd be in love with Caitlin Keegan's products the second I read her bio and saw that she lives in Brooklyn with her "intern".. a dachshund named Ollie! A girl after my own heart! I've got a little dachshund mix myself, so maybe I'm a little biased. I mean this lady sounds seriously awesome- She went to Rhode Island School of Design, illustrated from everything from Playboy to Nickelodeon, and is originally from a small town in Connecticut known as 'Home of the Wiffle Ball'! Really? Yep!

SNEEK PEEK /IT CAME FROM LEFT FIELD

Saturday July 1oth we open with "It Came from Left Field"!
Artists and long time buddies the Ming Donkey, Jason Baldwin and Herbert Rieth

are inspired by the underground comic book scene by way of Alabama, Vermont and Mississippi.

DONKEY found himself immersed in the art scene his entire life with an artist father who encouraged him to paint, draw and design on a regular basis. Check out this awesome stop animation he did of his little worker bees at play

Donkey will also be putting on a one man show during the opening between mixes by DJ Rob Wonder from Scion Radio

Baldwin found his start with skateboard designs and comic books, and today prints from Baldwin’s collection can be found at The University of Southern Indiana, and the Laurel Arts League, just to name a few. His pieces in the show are based on childhood stories, and each painting portrays a moment in time suspended separately from his past and present self.

Herb Reith stumbled into the art world by way of his punk rock band, and today expresses himself with uniquely painted fabric, as well as teaching art at the University of Alabama.

We'll also have surprise give away so make sure you come and check it out early!

Last night I went to check out "Lots and Parcels" an art show fundraiser for Burn Away.
I was one of the artists in the show and we got to pick a neighborhood to make a map of -it was a really fun project and great show!

They do a really great job a reviewing art around Atlanta and other interesting art relations like...
the new reality art show I'm addicted to-that's pretty horrible but fun to watch!
